A Nutritionist or Dietitian is a person that has extensively studied and become an expert in the field of nutrition. Generally, a dietitian is well versed in all areas of nutritional science and knows exactly what to do, and not to do, in the areas of eating healthy. When you are looking into the career of Dietitian or Nutritionist, you should look fully into what the career field entails and make certain this is the path you wish to take. There are several areas of expertise involved when you enter this field and some of these include nutritional education, food preparation, menu planning, nutritional counseling, nutritional research, and diet therapy.
If you delve further in the field, you could also look into the field of management and clinical dietician, those in this field specifically work within a nursing home or hospital and carry a great deal of responsibility. If you choose this field, you will be responsible for overseeing all food preparations, and to make decisions of preciseness followed completely, as well as planning the whole menu. Additionally, dieticians within the clinical field, use their expertise in teaching pregnant women, senior citizens, and diabetics who are at risk, about the foods they should, and should not, be eating in accordance with their medical conditions.
Those who decide to become research dietitians, typically work for companies that create commercial foods. They work to ensure that the best possible methods and ingredients are used in creating the foods for the consumers. Another popular area for dietitians and nutritionist is the consulting field. Those in this area typically have their own practice in a private setting and work in many areas, such as new foods or equipment testing, counseling patients, or creating menu's or recipe's for businesses.
Now one thing you should know is that there is a difference between a dietitian and a nutritionist. The two are generally referred to as one in the same; however, they do have vast differences. A nutritionist generally does not have the same type of training or education as a dietitian. For example, a person who is a registered dietician typically attends medical school at a four-year college and receives a great deal of training within the diet area. This result is a higher salary for dieticians and more responsibilities, because of the higher degree of training involved.
You are probably now wondering how you can become a dietitian. Well first, you must find an accredited program or school that follows, to the letter, all guidelines set forth by the American Diabetic Association.
To begin in the field of becoming a Dietician, you must have a minimum of a Bachelor's degree. Some areas of study in this field will include home economics, data processing, sociology, bacteriology, economics,physiology, business administration, statistics, and management theory.
Furthermore, after you have completed the necessary degree, the authorities in your area will likely require you to obtain a license or certificate in order to practice in the field of a dietician or nutritionist.
