To Carb Or Not To Carb

To Carb or Not To Carb?

Have you ever noticed most of the front covers of magazines littering the grocery store stands boast of some kind of miracle diet? Usually they are the same magazines with the pictures of scrumptious looking chocolate cakes and the promise of decadent recipes inside. No wonder Americans are confused about dieting, losing weight and staying healthy.

Today, more than ever, there is increasing employment opportunity for people who want to clear up confusion regarding health and eating. For those who have got this healthy eating thing figured out, perhaps you should consider becoming a dietitian. You could make a career out of helping the rest of us find a healthier lifestyle. And you can do it right from your own home.

Most dietitians who work from home are employed as community dietitians or consultants. Community dietitians may work for a home health care agency, going into homes and instructing families. They may evaluate and determine nutritional plans for special needs children, elderly relatives, or individuals with severe food allergies or other health problems. Sometimes they are called in to help with weight loss. They may even teach families how to shop for and prepare healthy meals.

Consultants can do the same service in their own private practice. Besides working with families, they may consult with sports teams, wellness programs, and other nutrition-related businesses. Sometimes consultant dietician are even called on to prepare marketing material or write columns for health-focused publications.

While a dietician business has very little overhead, it will cost you the price of a college education to get started. Licensed dietitians must have a Bachelor's Degree, plus a lot of hours of supervised work. Another option is to become a dietician assistant or dietetic technician. This career requires only an Associate's Degree and half the amount of supervised work. As a dietetic technician, you can provide the same services as a registered dietician, but you will need to have your work supervised by qualified personnel. Some states also allow for certification as nutritionist. The educational mandates for this job vary from state to state, but may not be as involved as the requirements for dietician and their assistants.

The good news is that with the advancement of technology, many colleges offer on-line education. You may be able to study from home in preparation to work from home. www.EatRight.org is a valuable site for anyone considering this career opportunity.

For health conscious individuals who desire to help others, a job as a dietician could be your calling. Not only could you clear up confusion for the dietary-challenged, you may just help change the world--one meal at a time.
