Water Cooler Gossip Or Massage

Water Cooler Gossip or Massage? You Decide

On those groggy Monday mornings, how many employees return to their desks refreshed after a water cooler break? Does gossiping with co-workers really pump them up for the week ahead? Wouldn’t it be nice if break time really offered something to invigorate employees? Something like... a massage.

With a little preparation and the proper equipment, you could be the main motivator of an office full of sluggish employees. By becoming a traveling masseuse you could be on your way to finding a new part-time job or full-time career, which ever suits your personal needs.

The first step will be to contact your State Board of Cosmetology to find out about certification or licensing requirements. After meeting those requirements you will need to invest in the proper equipment. Shop around for a portable massage table, cover and linens. Typing “massage table” into your search engine will put you in touch with many sights that sell these products. You’ll even find one with blueprints you can download to make your own table.

Next, experiment with oils to determine the best kind for your business. You will need something in non-breakable packaging for easy transport. You may want to keep a variety on hand so that clients can request favorite fragrances. It would also be a good idea to have a small CD player and couple of relaxing discs.

Now you are ready to print up some professional-looking literature and business cards. Send them to several businesses with good-sized employee bases. Detail the physical and emotional benefits of massage. Explain that you will need a dimly lit, private area located away from noise and distractions. Include a sign up sheet for about ten people per day. Also, offer discounted rates. For example, if your normal fee is $35 for a half-hour massage, offer the company employees the same half-hour for $15, assuming they fill all ten slots. You’ll be making $30 an hour and guaranteed five hours of work. Follow up your initial mailing with a phone call.

Depending on the size of the company you can schedule massages every day or every other day. For smaller offices you may only visit once or twice a month. If an employer doesn’t want to commit to regular sessions, suggest that he offer these services for a one-week trial. How about having massages available only during the holiday seasons when people are over stressed? A company could even offer massage week as a reward for employees who reach certain goals.

Being a traveling masseur means choosing your own work location and scheduling your own hours. You will also avoid the hassle and overhead of setting up a permanent workspace.

Taking your work to someone else’s office is a great idea if you are a person who enjoys this kind of “hands on” business. And when you are done rubbing down your client, offer him bottled water. After all, he just missed the daily gossip. You wouldn’t want him to miss his drink, as well.
