Write A Community Newsletter And Cash In On Advertising

Write a Community Newsletter and Cash in on Advertising

Does your town have a newsletter? Does your community have a newsletter? How about a few towns close together? If you answered no to any of these questions, you have the perfect opportunity to write one yourself! First, you must come up with some content to fill the actual newsletter. You can write about current events, profile people in the community, and list some upcoming events. It should be made and written for a general audience so that young and old alike will be interested in reading it.

Supplies:

Printer (regular black and white is fine)
Newsletter Paper (strong, standard 8 x 11 ? paper - if you want to go bigger so that the newsletter is that size when folded, have a printer such as Staples or Kinko's print up the newsletter for you)
Software to create the newsletter with (Word, Publisher, Photoshop, or one that is particularly tailored to creating newsletters)
Pictures or Clip Art to make the newsletter more readable (make sure you are free to use them, or take your own pictures or create your own clip art.)

Get Started:

Start by outlining 5-10 issues that you will create. You will always need to have at least 5 ready to print all the time. How often will you be printing them? You can do weekly, biweekly, monthly, quarterly, or large yearly issues. Whatever you can devote your time to, you should do. I would recommend starting off monthly, and see how that goes. It's your newsletter, you can always change the circulation dates.

Make sure you leave some spaces for advertising, maybe some classifieds as well-new jobs in the area, etc. Put your contact information in these spaces so that potential advertisers can contact you. Be ready for when they do though. Make up a price sheet, and let them know all of the places the newsletter goes to. You should place copies (yes, for free, your goal is to get money from advertisers, not readers) in colleges, universities, restaurants, bars, clubs, stores, grocery stores - anywhere where the owners will let you. Make sure you meet the owner face-to-face with a superb copy of your newsletter in hand and ask for their permission to place some copies in their business however often you will be issuing them.

Remember that your goal is to get to potential advertisers. Your stories and pictures need to appeal to the reader, and that will in turn appeal to an advertiser. With the first few copies, you may not hear anything from businesses, but if your community enjoys the newsletter, word will get around to them. After some time, depending how fast the word will travel, advertisers will begin contacting you. Not all will buy, but they may call back later! Just keep running with it. Remember that this is your newsletter. You can do what you want with it. You can make revisions, changes, etc. as you see fit. Ask someone who is reading a copy what they would like to see more of in the newsletter, and less of. Your reader is your link to a paying advertiser!
